Office of Off-World Correspondence — Form 21

The Sheet

This sheet is drawn in the browser and needs a canvas, which this one will not give it. The same ground is drawn flat on the area sheet, and that drawing does not move.

The sheet is true to itself. The figure is established; the scale is not, and no baseline has been supplied, so nothing on this sheet is given in any length. The contour interval is an interval of the figure.

The projection holds at the centre of the sheet. It does not hold elsewhere. No correction has been applied, and for that reason the ground is issued as two sheets and not one.

Fog is entered as an extent. The Office does not paint. One body stands on the highest ground on the far side, which fog does not do; it is drawn where it is and Schedule C stands.

Standing fog is entered to its level, or to where it thins to nothing, whichever it reaches first. A shoreline is drawn to it at every scale; press in and it does not move. It is drawn where it stands on the day the sheet is issued: the levels stand higher toward near passage and lower away from it. The highest the levels stood in the year is entered as a dotted line, and the ground below it is recorded white. It is not withdrawn as the levels fall. Fog that is running is drawn by what it carries, and gives way to the plan. The turning is entered as it stood when the sheet was issued.

The drift at the ground is entered as a tick on dry ground, with a bar across the end it comes from. Where white is recorded on the ground the tick is heavier. No cause is entered.

Running fog is entered with the way it was seen to go, and where it crosses a contour the contour is figured. The Office has not corrected any run to agree with its figures.

Ground that has flowed is entered level to where it stopped, and a line is drawn where it stopped. Glass is filled solid. The Office does not contour glass.

Paths are entered along the shores where they were seen, a little above the fog. They are not attributed. What stands at the edge is entered upright, with no plinth, because none was found.

The dashed boundary is the Bureau of Returning Persons’ extent. Inside it the ground has been walked. The Office drew the boundary. The Bureau has never said where it was. The body is the same ground at the same scale, turning.

Closer in, the ground is drawn as a plan: footprints, the plinth around each, the tracks between them, and the mark of a door. A plinth is continuous and is not broken for a door. The door is entered as a mark upon it. Where the Bureau has painted a place, the plan carries the masses the Bureau painted, in the order it painted them. Neither department has checked this against the other.

Windows are set to the plumb line. They are not set to the walls. Towers are entered upright. Where the Bureau records no settlement, none is drawn, and the sheet does not fill it in.

Office annotation Seventeen areas are pinned. The Bureau has supplied plates for seventeen. Position assigned by this Office.
