The Quiet Belt

The Quiet Belt: an open grass basin in watercolour under a wide sky, a faint double track running out across it, two low standing stones and a distant marker. No dwellings.
Cf. FilmThe ground the plate is drawn from.

THE QUIET BELT

nothing is here

No settlement. No road. No reason. The Belt contains no dwellings at all.

The Belt is crossed. It is not visited. Two hundred kadd from Grieth to the far side, and the figure is for the crossing, not for the Belt.

The extent of the Belt is not measured. The Bureau has requested it twice and has twice been supplied with the crossing time instead. The crossing time has been entered.

A returning person will find nothing here altered, which is not the same as finding it as they left it. There was nothing here to alter.

FrameA true circle, drawn dashed. Nothing inside it determined its shape. ViewpointDrawn from within, as empty areas are. There is no position outside it from which anything can be seen.

Office annotationThe Correspondent reports having walked in the Belt without intending to cross it. The Office holds no category for this and has filed it under crossings.
