The Vennet Road

The Vennet Road at dusk in watercolour: lit dwellings standing along a road that runs across the frame, purple hills behind, a low sun at the right, water in the foreground.
Cf. FilmThe ground the plate is drawn from.
THE VENNET ROAD

it is always the night before

The waiting place. Every table is laid and nobody is at any of them.

Rooms for the Sitting are arranged along the Road in advance, and the food is set out the evening before, as it must be. The Road is therefore drawn at dusk. It cannot honestly be drawn at any other hour.

Hallow & Son keep benches at the far end. The benches are not for sale. A returning person is expected to sit on one and is not expected to say anything.

One dwelling on the Road has a notably flat window and carries no marker on this sheet. Whether it is there is still being established.

FrameA long shallow lozenge. It follows the road. ViewpointDrawn from above, as inhabited areas are. It is the only plate at dusk.

Office annotationThe Correspondent states that he has been on the Road only on the night before, never on the day itself. The Office has no record of anyone who has been on it on the day. The Road does not lie between any two places the Office holds.
