Ruvenn

Ruvenn in watercolour: a tall wall of grey columnar rock running across the back of the picture with its top lost in mist, a strip of green ground at its foot with a track along it and one row of poured and carved dwellings of many shapes between the track and the cliff, among them tall spires ridged like corkscrews, low star-shaped masses, one with a low bay open at the ground and one with a small outbuilding; a level bank of pale fog across the whole foreground, and a row of small clay jars set out on the ground at its edge.
Cf. FilmThe ground the plate is drawn from.
RUVENN

under the Shelf, on the same fog

Ruvenn stands under the Shelf, on the same fog. From Ruvenn the Shelf is a line with nothing on it, which is what the Shelf is.

You came down to it from Grieth, twenty kadd along the shore, and the fog was on your left the whole way. It is on your left now. Ruvenn is one side of a track and mell is the other, and the track is the whole of the town.

Vessels are set out at the edge in the evening and brought in before the count. Nobody at Ruvenn will say what they are brought in with, and the Bureau has not pressed the point.

The Shelf is above you and the cliff is between. The marker on the Shelf cannot be seen from Ruvenn. It has been looked for. The Bureau asked for a figure from Ruvenn up to the Shelf and was told that nobody goes from the one to the other, and has entered that there is no figure.

The hollows are on the fog side of the track, between the track and the vessels. You stepped over them going down to the edge, and nobody minded.

FrameA long shallow lozenge. It follows the shore, and Ruvenn is the shore. ViewpointDrawn from above, as inhabited areas are.
